Speaking to a captivated Wharton audience on March 6th as part of the Wharton Leadership Lectures Series, Carly Fiorina, Chairman & CEO of Hewlett Packard, touched on themes of reinvention and leadership. Outside of the HP headquarters are inscribed the words, The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
As we bask in the glow of Wharton’s recent #1 ranking in the Financial Times survey of top global business schools, I bet only a few of you noted that our sister school INSEAD ranked #6. Nothing new, it has been there for years. So why is it that out of the 20+ spots (per campus) INSEAD granted Wharton students this semester, only five of us went? First years, I am talking to you! Fair warning here: just this once I have exchanged my “faithful staff reporter” hat for a “completely biased op-ed” hat, to help me keep my balance on the soap box.
While others were sunning themselves on Hawaiian beaches or climbing Peruvian mountains, twelve Wharton students took on a different challenge over Spring Break: to immerse themselves in the European Private Equity industry. The team visited a wide range of companies, from very large buyout shops (Blackstone, Candover, Goldman) to mid-market firms (Bridgepoint) to sector-focused funds (Providence, Morgan Stanley Real Estate Fund) to those that invest across the whole spectrum (Advent, Warburg Pincus).
Stay Patient - Approximately 27% of full-time and 45% of summer internships were found in the March through July period. Many companies have only started their recruiting efforts and more will be coming to campus over the months ahead. Use multiple channels to source jobs beyond on-campus activities, especially networking which normally accounts for a large percentage of job opportunities.
It is a tradition at US institutions of higher education and, in particular, at Wharton for the graduating class to fund a gift to give back to Wharton. Now it is our turn. Our Class of 2003 Gift, represented by 757 individuals from 59 countries giving 1 gift, is our chance to leave a permanent and meaningful mark upon our school.
Planning a vacation in China this summer? Or, maybe you’re thinking of visiting exotic locales such as Morocco or Panama. Well, a group of Wharton students is busily organizing trips to these, and other, countries around the world, but ours is truly an expedition with a difference! For example, in Panama, you will find these Wharton students not at the usual tourist attractions but at the crafts store in Portobelo, a historic district that dates back to Columbus.
Recently, members of the Wharton Veteran’s Club gave a comprehensive and visually engaging presentation on the tactics and equipment the US military is likely to use during the ongoing war with Iraq. The panel, consisting of first and second year student veterans from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, was aimed to inform the audience about US military attributes that were being used during the current conflict.
This summer, several Wharton students will scatter to developing countries where they will lend their business skills to non-profit organizations and community business ventures as part of the Wharton International Volunteer Project. What are these trips like? Recently, I spoke with Naomi Chan and Rami Ghandour about their WIVP experience last summer consulting to two children’s charities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Another month or so of classes to go and you don’t have a summer internship or full-time job locked in – so you’re out of luck, right? That’s a myth, one of the many surrounding the MBA job search. The fact is, students find both full-time and summer internship opportunities in March, April, May, and later.
