Beer pong athletes push bodies to the limit

Mirroring the every-kid-gets-a-trophy spirit of the NHL, five teams advanced to the play-offs. Despite an inside-out rally cap, Team Peppo lost to the French's in the play-in game for the fourth seed. (In a swap of dubious legality but admirable fidelity, Charley exchanged teammate Flanders for his late-arriving wife.) In the first semi-final match, Bolton's team squared off against the French's. Bolton, an aging veteran returning to the game of his youth, carried his side to victory with a torrent of sinks and hits. In the second semi-final match, Maclean and Jensen defeated Team ABBA in a tense match. With his team struggling and pain mounting in his injured paddle-hand, Grossberg spiked his paddle into the wall and called a time-out. Having doubly displeased the gods of beer pong, Team ABBA nasdaqed shortly after the break. In the final, Maclean and Jensen triumphed 12-6 with Jensen showing his much ballyhooed but heretofore seldom seen Gift for the game.

Post match celebrations were appropriately muted given the preliminary nature of the competition. Jensen stated his intentions with spare language, "I'm going to Disneyland. A lot more focus. A lot more training." Winners and losers alike appeared to be focused on upcoming pong events. In February, many of these athletes will travel to Dartmouth, the spiritual home of beer pong, for a competition against teams from other MBA programs. In March, assuming a complete recovery for Grinberg, team G-berg will defend the Pong 1st trophy in the second annual Wharton International Invitational Beer Pong Tournament.
