Another week, another superb round of games on Left Bank Field. The headline news from Saturday was Cohort H’s last-gasp victory in overtime that stunned reigning champions Cohort K. Elsewhere, A did enough to beat D, and C chalked up a solid win over F.

In this week’s early match, Cohort A made the most of the female double points rule to rack up a 24-8 lead by half-time. Sean Dowling (WG’11) was the orchestrator from the quarter-back position, with some solid passing and good quick runs when required. Just after half-time, Sean found his partner, Tracy, for her second touch-down of the game. To most in the crowd it looked like goodnight Cohort D. However, D are clearly a spirited bunch, and they fought all the way back to 40-32. Sadly for them, it was not enough, and a final touchdown from A killed off the game.

It was heartbreak for Cohort K in the second fixture of the day. They never really got going in the first half, and H dominated proceedings. Two male touchdowns from a hyper-competitive H side left K reeling. However, just as the game was coming to a close, a barn-storming run down the flank from man-mountain Daniel Curtis (WG’11) brought them right up to H’s end zone. A female touch-down followed, bringing the scores level, but K couldn’t find the conversion. H then took possession and raced up the field, in part thanks to speedster David Abraham (WG’10). A touch-down was not forthcoming, and the game went into overtime. K then failed to score during their turn from 20 yards, whereas H did, and with it came a memorable 18 – 12 victory.

At the press conference after the game, K’s 2008 male MVP Sean Nowak (WG’10) said of his cohort’s defeat, “No one likes to lose, but we put in a good effort. Last year we lost the first game and still went on to win the competition. I’m confident we can turn things around again this year.”

Cohort F are another team that will be hoping for a change in fortunes. Cohort C condemned F to a rare shut-out, and credit must go to C’s determined defense. C’s offensive charge was led by the athletic Kerry Kellogg (WG’11), who’s performance included an amazing leap and catch in the end-zone for the first touch-down. Michelle Gaster (WG’11) was amongst the other scorers who helped to complete a 30-0 win.

Now that we have seen all the teams play, what conclusions can we draw? Perennial powerhouse, J, already look like they will be pushing for honors come the end of the season. A, B and C, have all shown they have something special about them, and if they maintain their form, they may well be worth backing down the bookies. As for the rest, the season is a long and winding road, and one or two more teams will undoubtedly emerge to surprise us all.
